Monitor Arms & Eye Strain

A monitor arm is often viewed as an aesthetic desk accessory, but it is actually a critical piece of ergonomic infrastructure. The stand that comes in the box with your monitor is almost always too short, and stacking it on a pile of books removes the ability to make fine-tuned micro-adjustments throughout the day.

Decoupling Height from the Desk

If you do not have a monitor arm, the height of your screen is fixed relative to your desk. If you lower your desk to type comfortably, your monitor drops below eye level, forcing you to crane your neck down. A monitor arm completely decouples the screen from the desk surface, allowing you to establish independent, perfect heights for both your hands and your eyes.

Focal Distance and the 20/20/20 Rule

Your monitor should be roughly an arm's length away. If it is too close, the ciliary muscles in your eyes must work constantly to maintain focus, leading to digital eye strain, dryness, and headaches. A monitor arm allows you to push the screen further back on shallow desks. To combat eye fatigue, employ the 20/20/20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds to relax your eye muscles.

Dual Monitor Ergonomics

If you use two monitors, do not place the bezels dead center in front of you. This forces your neck into a permanent twist to look at either screen. Determine which monitor is your primary focus and place it directly in front of you. Angle the secondary monitor sharply on either the left or right side. If you use both equally (50/50 split), place them centrally but angle them aggressively inward to form a shallow V-shape, keeping the focal distance uniform.
